Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea-Conakry: The Essence of West Africa / 18 days in April 2027

Trip to Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea-Conakry: The Essence of West Africa (This trip connects with the Burkina Faso tour)

The distinct and profound colonial roots of Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea-Conakry have shaped their current cultural, social, and political identities. This historical past and the subsequent conflicts have forged the character of each country and its people, who are quite distinct from one another and also from all their neighbors in West Africa. But not everything stems from colonial heritage; many ethnic groups, such as the Malinke, preserve their ancestral traditions—a world of initiation and spirituality that we will explore in greater depth.

On this trip to Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea-Conakry, we’ll explore and discover the three countries that are perhaps the most unique in this entire part of the continent.

We’re in a region of Africa that we know very well, having traveled there for more than fifteen years, and we’d like to suggest a trip that combines ceremonies, architecture, colonial heritage, urban culture, music, local tourism projects, beaches, and nature.

A Trip to Sierra Leone, the Diamond of West Africa

Sierra Leone is a truly captivating country that never fails to surprise our travelers. The people there are remarkably hospitable, and wherever we go, we’re always greeted with a smile and a “welcome to Sierra Leone.”

Freetown and the Secret Societies

Freetown is one of Africa’s most interesting capital cities. With its vibrant markets, a chimpanzee sanctuary, colonial architecture, beaches, great restaurants, and some very unique cultural aspects, it’s a must-visit destination—and one that’s definitely worth spending several days exploring the Freetown Peninsula.

Scattered throughout Freetown are old wooden houses, some of which seem more at home on the 18th-century East Coast of America than in a hot West African city. Others appear to have been built hundreds of years ago on the Caribbean islands—yet another reflection of Sierra Leone’s history as a colony established for freed slaves.

Krio Secret Societies

Many of the secret societies in Freetown and the surrounding area, such as the Ojeh, are of Yoruba origin. These societies and traditions came to Sierra Leone through freed Africans—people rescued from slave ships who were resettled in Freetown and on the Sierra Leone peninsula by the British.

In Freetown and the surrounding area , we will attend various Krio ceremonies, some of which are “Venetian”-style, such as the Fairy Masquerade, and others that are “Nigerian Yoruba”-style, such as the Ojeh.

Beaches, Tiwai Island, and Mende Culture

After exploring the beautiful beaches of the Freetown Peninsula—such as River Number 2 and Bureh Beach—we’ll head to Mende country to learn about its culture and ceremonies. There , we’ll have the opportunity to attend a Sande Society ceremony, where we’ll see the Sowei mask emerge.

In that same Mende region, we’ll visit the Tiwai Nature Reserve on the Moa River, which offers some very beautiful scenery.

In addition to the natural and cultural attractions of this part of the trip, we’ll highlight local ecotourism projects currently underway in some of the small towns we’ve been visiting for the past fifteen years.

A Trip to Liberia, Africa’s First Independent Country

Liberia is completely different from any other African country, as are its history and origins. We can say that Liberia is an interesting country, especially when viewed in the context of its neighboring countries, which allows us to see it in a regional perspective.

Liberia was founded in 1822 by freed African American slaves who sought to establish a new society in Africa, and it declared its independence in 1847, becoming the first nation in Africa to do so.

One of the most notable historical aspects of Liberia is its connection to Freemasonry, and another is its turbulent past.

As we travel around the country, we’ll delve deeper into its history and visit some places of interest, such as the capital (Monrovia) and the East Nimba Nature Reserve.

Trip to Liberia

East Nimba National Reserve in Liberia

We will travel to the eastern Nimba Reserve in southeastern Liberia, a mountain range that serves as a natural border between Liberia, Guinea, and Ivory Coast. This protected area in Liberia was once home to the famous Liberian-American-Swedish Mining Company (LAMCO).

LAMCO was a now-defunct Liberian company that mined iron ore in the Nimba Mountains in Liberia during the second half of the 20th century. Founded in 1955 by American and Swedish investors, the company established the first large-scale mining operation in Liberia.

These former mining sites are now home to a nice hotel and a wonderful “Blue Lake.” We’ll go on a hike to Mount Nimba (optional) and visit the old mining hangars.

A Trip to Guinea-Conakry, the Land of Dance and Percussion

Guinea-Conakry is undoubtedly one of our favorite countries. We’ll travel through the country to the rhythm of the djembe, flute, and balafon.

In the land of the Malinke—heirs to their great empire and an impressive oral tradition—the Donso hunters will don their striking Komo masks, and the strongmen of the Malinke will perform the Dundunba dance.

The streets of Conakry echo with the percussion and acrobatics of the famous circus schools. In the forests of remote Guinea Forestal, ceremonies and rites of passage are still very much alive. And yes, the food in Guinea-Conakry is delicious.
