Our Philosophy: Responsible Travel in Africa

Kumakonda stands for responsible travel and sustainable tourism in Africa.

Our philosophy is very simple: we want to offer you the opportunity to enjoy a unique experience by taking you to the most beautiful and remote places in West Africa, as well as the chance to engage directly with local culture and traditions and to learn about the reality of each country. We do all this while striving to minimize the negative impact that tourism might have on the areas we travel through and to support small-scale local tourism projects.

To achieve this, we rely on the following points, which we believe are essential not only for a travel company but also for any traveler.

• Respect for local culture and customs
• We will try to stay at small hotels and campgrounds and do most of our shopping at small businesses and from local producers to support the local economy.
• Treat the areas we visit with the utmost care.
• Ask for permission before taking a photo.
• Do not give meaningless gifts or donations, as this encourages gratuitous and systematic begging and degrades the areas you visit.
• We’ll try as much as possible to reduce our use of plastic, since plastic bags are becoming a real problem in many countries in the region. To that end, we’ll try as much as possible to treat the water in our tanks with purification tablets, and we’ll ask each traveler to bring a water bottle.
