Summary of the 13-day trip to southern Algeria / Trekking in the Tassili and Tadrart Rouge in a 4×4

On this 13-day trip, we’ll depart from Algiers and fly to Djanet, the capital of southeastern Algeria. Our objectives are two: to visit the Tassili Plateau on foot for five days, where it’s said to be the largest open-air museum of rock art in the world, with large murals of magnificent paintings. We’ll then explore Tadrart Rouge by 4×4, which everyone who visits raves about its incredible scenic beauty, combining dunes with arches and other rock formations. Not to mention the rock art found here as well.

  • Day 1: Algiers, meeting in the capital. Hotel.
  • Days 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 Tassili (walking route) Flight to Djanet and walk through Tassili N’Ajjer to discover sites such as Tin Zoumaitak or Safar. The approximate route will be: Djanet, Tfatesst, and Tamrghirt to visit the valley of ancient cypresses, Sefar, Tin Zoumaitak, Wan Aghrben, and Daw Tehe. The climb to the Tassili plateau will be tough, but it holds a great treasure with thousands of rock paintings. Executed in ochre, white, and black, depending on the period, they depict animals, hunting scenes, chariot races, and even the worship of an ancestral god, or scenes of people swimming. Of high quality, their designs are exciting to stand in front of and observe their details, without forgetting that they tell the story of a time when the desert was a green and pleasant land. Our things will be transported by donkeys, and we will camp every night near those paintings.
  • Days 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 Tadrart Rouge by 4×4: In Tadrart National Park, we will visit the region known as “Tadrart Rouge,” which boasts some of the most spectacular scenery. We will visit places like Tin Essou, Tisska, Moul Naga, the Tin Merzouga dunes, Ouadi In Djaren, Adjalatai, and Tiharmioun. We will end the tour with a shower in Djanet and visit the famous “Crying Cow” carvings before heading to the airport. Overnight stays will be spent camping.
