Mukanda Expedition. Trip to DR Congo in summer 2022
In the depths of the Democratic Republic of Congo, traditional culture resists. After two months of research in the country we can offer one of the most impressive cultural experiences to be had in Central Africa.
Mukanda Initiation, a unique opportunity to attend a normally inaccessible event.
Several hundred 12-year-olds (so far about 700) have been recruited to perform the Mukanda or rite of passage in a remote region of the Pende territory, next dry season 2022 (possibly August) and in Kumakonda we will have access to the initiation camp as well as the Mukanda departure festival, where hundreds of masks will be dancing all over the place.
For one month (it used to last for months or even years), these children will stay in the initiation camp (built for the occasion) together with their teachers (Nganga Mukanda) and the grand master (Kele). There they will be circumcised and taught everything they need to make the transition to a full adult life.
During this harsh period of confinement, these young people will learn to be resilient and to respect the rules of the village community.
They will learn about myths and customs, perform various manual tasks, learn how to hunt and be taught how to behave properly with women.
After the initiation, all these young people, now grown up, will return home proudly, amidst a huge celebration involving countless different masks.
10-day trip to Congo DRC July-August 2022
We at Kumakonda have been privileged to be invited to attend this Mukanda, and will be able to stay at the initiation camps and share in the joy of the "rite of passage" for these children and their families.
If you want to join us next July - August 2022 (the exact date will not be announced until 4 months before) in this incredible experience, you can write to us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will give you all the information.
